So you need a Domain?
Domains are the name by which your website will be known on the web. Usually a domain shares a common thread with, or is associated with the product or service which you intend to promote through your website.
For example the domain name www.byronbaykithomes.com.au describes what the product is within the name, also it promotes where it is geographically located. The .(dot)com refers to a commercial entity and the .(dot) au refers to Australia.
It is common place these days for people to automatically turn to the Web for information. Vistors and customers will remember and associate your website more easily if they can relate it to the product or service which you wish to promote.

What if I cannot get the domain I want?
It really depends on how committed you are to that particular name. If you have an existing brand name that you're known for, you'll probably not want to ditch that name just because you couldn't get the domain name. After all, it took you a lot of time, money and effort to establish that name. You may simply want to try to buy over the domain name from the current owner. This can be done by checking the "whois" information for the domain, contacting that person listed to see if they're willing to sell it. You probably should be aware that they are likely to want to charge a higher fee than you'll normally get when buying new domains (assuming they want to sell it in the first place). On the other hand, if you're just starting out, you might prefer the cheaper alternative of trying to obtain a domain name first, and then naming your website (or business) after the domain that you've acquired. So if you've acquired, say, the domain name "computernetic.com", then your website and business might be named "Computernetic" or "Computernetic.com".
Hints for choosing the right domain name :
Keep it Short
It is possible to register a name with up to 63 characters, you have to keep in mind that people need to be able to remember it, along with easily type it into their browser. Try to register the shortest name that your customers and visitors will associate with your Website.
Dot What?
There are many different extensions available right now. For businesses, we recommend a .com.au or .com suffix. It is the first extension that most people try when searching for a Website.
Avoid Trademark names
Gone are the days where an "entrepreneur" would squat on a big multinational domain name and sell it for a hefty profit. These big companies are no longer forking out $$$, they are calling in their lawyers!
Register it NOW!
If you find the Domain name that fits your needs, jump on it. If you don't you risk ending up with the "the-domain-that-no-one-wanted.com". Register before you loose the opportunity to get the name you really want.
One is good, Two is better?
Sometimes, its a good idea to hedge your bets and register several similar domain names. If you have "yourname.com", register "yourname.net" so no one else takes it. You can register your full company name and a shorter, easier to remember version.(Several domains can point to the same Website.)
Using *special* ChArAcTeRs?
Remember, Domain names can only use letters, numbers, and dashes. Spaces and symbols are not allowed. Also, domain names are not case sensitive.
Ask Around
When you have short listed several available name choices, see what your friends and clients have to say. A name that may make perfect sense to you may be too hard for other people to remember. Is your domain easy to say? Is it hard to spell? Do you have to explain why you chose the name?
